Overwatch is a massive hit among gamers since the release in 2015. So it’s understandable when the demand for cross-platform support is in a massive surge. Although at the moment it’s almost unlikely Overwatch will ever support cross-platform gaming. However, gamers are a bit hopeful with Overwatch 2. Overwatch sits with games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, all of which are cross platform gaming ecosystems of devices.
However, although many fans are highly disappointed and outraged by no crossplay support for Overwatch, Overwatch 2 will bring the popular game with the much-needed feature and definite improvements. The players need to wait till 2021, but the Company promises to deliver the fun and gameplay the fans desire and expect to attract new players and expand the Overwatch League further.

The Official Blizzard Page stated all players live in “separate ecosystems” about Overwatch. So consequently cross platform isn’t supported either understandably. Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan echoed that the team is very keen and is looking into crossplay, specifically about Overwatch 2.
Kaplan stated further that Overwatch players would be able to play with Overwatch 2 players in core competitive modes once crossplay is available, which is most likely for the 2nd generation of Overwatch gaming. So the whole idea around cross-platform gaming for Overwatch can be summed up in one term – unavailable.

Why isn’t Overwatch Cross-Platform?
Overwatch has been against crossplay support since day one. An Individual gaming ecosystem is an ultimate priority. It is a cohesive gamer experience with restrictions. Moreover, every cross-platform gaming ecosystems interlink to one Activision ID, which means cross-progression is possible too.
In simple terms, everything ties to one Activision account, so when platforms can switch, progress is easily transferable by logging in to the one singular Activision account. So essentially it’s free of platform orientation. Players can pick up from where they left off.
Will the next generation offer Cross-Platform support?
Now the problem with Overwatch is obvious. Overwatch progression does not have any limitations to an external account. It’s tied to whatever online service the platform it’s played on, supports. Moving everything over to an external account could mean a loss of progress in the game.
For a game that’s five years old and highly competitive, starting over from level one doesn’t bode well. Its emphasis on the individual gaming ecosystem is preferable among gamers, yet it is a massive disappointment among multiplayer gamers. Given that players from the original game and the sequel will be able to play together in some game modes suggests that Blizzard is implementing some external progression tracking system.
And we are very sure to see all these implementations for Overwatch 2.
Problems with Cross-Platform on Overwatch:
Outside of technical problems, there’s one massive hurdle for Overwatch cross-platform support: The keyboard and mouse. On consoles, Overwatch supports a controller, and on PC, it supports a keyboard and mouse. Despite supporting keyboard and mouse inputs, players can’t use this set up on a PS4 or Xbox One.
Gamers can very well spend a few hundred dollars on adapters, but that’s not the feasible way out. Overwatch does not allow console games to use anything apart from a controller. Competitions will also become tough when devices are changed. The person with a mouse and keyboard carries an unfair advantage.
What is overwatch League?
The main reason for this stance being is that Overwatch League that primarily checks the skill sets posed by individual gamers. Professional gameplay is all about skills, so consistency is the key. The Overwatch team has been highly passionate about parity in gameplay and the fact that it creates a fair and just battleground since it’s launch. Keeping up with all the esports norms Overwatch League is a huge success, despite the lack of crossplay support.
However, not everyone is taking Blizzard’s stance and decisions on a sporting level. Fans are deleting their accounts, Blizzard employees have staged a walkout, and commentators have cut ties with the Company. Fans have been trending #BoycottBlizzards.
Long time players have deleted their accounts and burnt the copies of the game. The backlash is enormous considering that Overwatch League is the only big tournament for Blizzards and Overwatch players. Now Blizzard is trying to make sure that cross platform gaming is happening soon. It can be in the plans for their next games.
We can easily be clear that Overwatch is going to stay as it is. The game will not come with cross platform support anytime soon. We can be highly optimistic about Overwatch 2, and existing Overwatch players can enjoy it once it’s 2nd version is released. So we can hope and expect a great year ahead for the Blizzards team in 2021. The team is passionate and committed to their stance.
The Overwatch 2 will release in 2021 and cross platform support is imminent now. Kaplan is highly optimistic about it. The Company released games alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare with crossplay support. So the Company can provide a cross platform gaming ecosystem. With Overwatch, it’s just unfortunate and highly understandable given the experience and creation the Company expected from it.
